Feature – MCU Phase 4… what movies are coming out and where will they take us?
Phase 4 Theories and Predictions – Part 2: The Phase 4 Avengers movie.
The New Avengers
- This will be the Avengers 1 of Phase 4-6. We won’t see a massive crossover again until Avengers 7 or 7-8.
- Who would you put in the New Avengers?
- The 3 characters that aren’t actually Avengers yet:
- Doctor Strange
- He’s too powerful. He was actually pulled out of the Endgame battle to keep the battlefield from washing away.
- Good for pulling the Avengers into conflict, but not as an actual Avenger.
- Winter Soldier
- Still technically a fugitive.
- Depends on what happens in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ Series.
- What role does he fill?
- Black Panther
- Too important to the franchise not to include in the mix
- May still only “assist” the Avengers as he is the king of an entire nation and that’s part of the character’s problem in the Comics. He can’t be an Avenger and King of Wakanda at the same time.
- He might be the only character from Phase 3 to join the Avengers officially in Phase 4?
- Doctor Strange
- The 3 characters that aren’t actually Avengers yet:
- The characters you forgot were Avengers:
- Rocket Raccoon, Nebula and Okoye ARE Avengers.
- In the aftermath of the dissemination, these characters join Cap, Black Widow, and Rhodie in helping restore order to the planet and galaxy.
- Rocket and Nebula won’t be part of the Avengers since they are in space with the Guardians.
- Okoye is loyal to T’Challa, not the Avengers.
- Note on Captain Marvel and Okoye’s diminished presence in Endgame:
- This was due to the fact that those movies had not come out yet when Endgame was being filmed.
- It was NOT because they were afraid Black Panther and Captain America wouldn’t do well or because of the Brie Larson “controversy.”.
- Rocket Raccoon, Nebula and Okoye ARE Avengers.
- The original Avengers:
- Hawkeye
- Because he’s getting his own Disney+ series, I think he’s done.
- The character is better as a mentor for a younger Hawkeye.
- Professor Hulk
- Maybe a cameo to advise on technology, but probably not a part of the team.
- Maybe we find him consulting with Shuri?
- Thor
- Probably part of the Guardians franchise where he’s more interesting.
- Why bring him back as the only remaining original Avenger?
- War Machine
- Included him here because he really is an OG Avenger.
- If we have Captain Marvel we keep Rhodie as they have a relationship in the comics, which is referenced in Endgame.
- He could be the new Iron Man
- More than likely he will just work in an advisory position like Nick Fury.
- Hawkeye
- The other Avengers:
- Captain Marvel
- Kevin Feige has said Carol will be the figurehead of the Avengers now that Tony Stark is gone.
- But like Doctor Strange, she’s so overpowered that it’s hard to make her work with the rest of the team.
- Will she be used as a plot device to bring the Avengers into cosmic conflicts? Will she be in the movies, but not really part of the team?
- Her movies may be used to introduce other characters who are more likely to become full-time Avengers especially since Tony and Nick Fury were responsible for pulling together the original Avengers. Maybe that will now be Captain Marvel and War Machine.
- Captain America (Sam Wilson)
- Why make him Captain America and then not use him? He’s in.
- A lot depends on the Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney+ series.
- Disney+ series will probably be used to transition Sam from Falcon to Captain America.
- Scarlet Witch
- Same as Hawkeye. Her Disney+ Series will keep her in the universe, but she won’t be a part of this movie or this team of Avengers.
- Wouldn’t be surprised if she’s a plot point or possibly a villain later on.
- Wouldn’t be surprised if she gives us the Dark Phoenix movie we’ve always wanted.
- Spider-Man
- Fan-favorite
- Like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland is all in for as many Marvel movies as they want him for. I think he will be our Spider-Man for the next decade at least.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp
- If we get Ant-Man we get The Wasp.
- Ant-Man came into his own in Endgame
- Ant-Man and The Wasp are founding members of the comic book Avengers and are characters that we haven’t really seen work as part of the team yet.
- Captain Marvel
- Who else could we get?
- Shang-Chi
- May just be a Doctor Strange or Captain Marvel plot device, but adds much needed diversity.
- Closer to the current power level of the team than big hitters like Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange or Thor.
- Sersi
- We know we’re getting an Eternals movie and Sersi is one of the more prominent Eternals to join the Avengers.
- Could fill in the power vacuum left by Scarlet Witch and Thor.
- Namor
- If he’s introduced in Black Panther he may be in the Avengers movie, but will probably never be an official Avenger.
- Also rumored to be in Doctor Strange
- Photon
- May only be my wishful thinking, but I don’t see why we wouldn’t get Monica Rambeau as Photon considering (I know, broken record) she was the first black woman to lead the Avengers.
- Black Knight is rumored to be joining the MCU in phase 4.
- Maybe in Doctor Strange 2?
- Shang-Chi
- What does the New Avengers lineup ultimately look like?
- Captain Marvel, prominent but not always directly involved. A lot of planets need her help.
- War Machine (as Iron Man or in an advisory role), Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Spider-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp.
- Black Panther will be in the movies, but still not an Avenger.
- Possibly add Shang-Chi and/or (lesser chance) Photon and Sersi
- Who’s the big bad?
- There are a lot of Rumors that Norman Osborn will be the next Big Bad for Phase 4. He may be elevated to director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and put together the Dark Avengers which would allow the MCU to do a Masters of Evil/Thunderbolts team. If the next phase of movies introduce us to smaller villains that don’t die at the end, they might be able to build to this.
- We already have Baron Zemo and Ghost who have survived being villains in their movies. There are also rumors that Killmonger isn’t actually dead. Looks like the beginning of a super-villain team to me!
- Most of the remaining Avengers are still in violation of the Sokovia Accords, which gives the U.S. Government and Norman Osborn as Iron Patriot may need to handle that for the U.S. Government.
- If Marvel did this, it would be another first… I still believe that the DCU’s only way of beating Marvel to the punch would have been to do a series of movies that led us to the Legion of Doom.
- Sokovia Accords are just a few steps away from mutant hysteria and registration. And we already know that Inhumans are feared.
- This doesn’t give us anything on a cosmic scale, however and we know that Captain Marvel is the new central character of the MCU so where does the cosmic stuff come in?
- Notice there is no Guardians of Galaxy 3 in the Phase 4 line-up. That could be because director James Gunn is working on Suicide Squad. It could also be because we don’t get back into Cosmic level plots until Phase 5.
