Making Connections
One of the things that motivated me to start geektitude was a desire to connect with people who liked the same stuff I liked. It was a way for me to meet people who are passionate about something and want to share it with the world. It’s exciting to be able to reach out to other people in the geek culture community and make that connection. Up until now, I’ve had friends and family on my podcast as guest, but that’s going to slowly start to change. Starting this week, I’m going to be geeking out with people that I’ve just met. For an introvert like me, that’s kind of scary. But it’s exciting, too! I talk a lot about conventions on my show and in my blogs, and that’s because making connections is what conventions are all about. When I went to the BlizzCon “Con Before the Storm” event, it was amazingly easy to just start talking to people because we are all there to celebrate something we love. But conventions aren’t the only way to make those connections. Start looking at the world around you. Is someone wearing a geeky t-shirt? Tell them you think it’s cool! Did you notice that the person in front of you at the grocery store has an anime wallet? Let them know you like that character, too! Take time to make connections no matter how small. It’s the difference between being a community and just being a bunch of people that like the same stuff.
