Episode 143 – MCU Phase 4 – Part 1: The Movies of Phase 4

WeeklyGeekery (The geeky stuff we did this week)

Feature – MCU Phase 4… what movies are coming out and where will they take us?

Phase 4 Theories and Predictions – Part 1: The Phase 4 Line-Up

2 versions of the Phase 4 line-up are floating around out there. The leaked one is probably more accurate as the other is just speculation by some guy named John Campea (and I don’t really know who that is).

Leaked Version:
July 2, 2019 – Spider-Man: Far From Home
May 1, 2020 – Black Widow
Nov. 6, 2020 – The Eternals
Feb. 12, 2021 – Black Panther 2
May 7, 2021 – Shang-Chi
Nov. 5, 2021 – Doctor Strange 2
Feb. 18, 2022 – Captain Marvel 2
May 6, 2022 – New Avengers
July 29, 2022 – Ant-Man 3

NOT the John Campea version:
July 2, 2019 – Spider-Man: Far From Home
May 1, 2020 – Black Widow
Nov. 6, 2020 – Doctor Strange 2
Feb. 12, 2021 – The Eternals
May 7, 2021 – Black Panther 2
Nov. 5, 2021 – Shang-Chi
Feb. 18, 2022 – Guardians of the Galaxy 3
May 6th 2022 – Captain Marvel 2
July 29th 2022 – Avengers 5

July 2, 2019 – Spider-Man: Far From Home
Actually the end of Phase 3
Mysterio is a fake superhero creating problems to solve and gain fame.
Sets up Multiverse
May introduce Oscorp which might play a big part in the MCU moving forward.

May 1, 2020 – Black Widow
Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova (Black Widow clone?).
Doesn’t make sense to go backwards with their films unless the story pushes us forward in the greater universe so what is this movie?

Nov. 6, 2020 – The Eternals
Eternals rumored to have Richard Madden as Iccarus and Angelina Joli as Sersi
Probably based on the 2006 run where the Eternals don’t actually know they are immortal beings with amazing powers.

Feb. 12, 2021 – Black Panther 2
Might introduce Namor
If that’s the case it will be the classic “heroes fight each other until they team-up against the ACTUAL bad guy” trope.
Are the Black Panther movies really Wakanda movies?

May 7, 2021 – Shang-Chi
Shang Chi’s father may be the Mandarin
Kevin Feige says that there are plans to bring a real Mandarin into the MCU.
I know nothing about the character but I’m kind of excited to see him in the MCU.

Nov. 5, 2021 – Doctor Strange 2
Rumored that Dr. Strange may take place in the 80s.
Are all of phase 4 prequels?
What does this movie do?
Will Baron Mordo be the villain?
Possibly a Scarlet Witch crossover.
We will get major hints to the big bad in this movie.

Feb. 18, 2022 – Captain Marvel 2
Could be the entry point for new characters
Monica Rambeau’s Photon
Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel
Noh-Var’s Marvel Boy (Kree Soldier and member of the Young Avengers)
Nova?
Kevin Feige says they are doing team-ups moving forward.
Crossover with individual Guardians of the Galaxy members in Captain Marvel 2 or 3?

May 6, 2022 – New Avengers
Skip this for now because it’s 2 whole additional conversations by itself.
Just remember:
Phase 4’s focus is on Diversity.
This will be the Avengers 1 of Phase 4-6.
We won’t see a massive crossover again until Avengers 7 or 7-8.
The Black Panther, Doctor Strange and The Winter Soldier are not members of the Avengers.
The Black Panther sided with Iron Man during Civil War, but was not a member.
Technically Spider-Man wasn’t an Avenger until Tony made him one in Infinity War. He even told Tony in Homecoming that he wasn’t ready to be an Avenger.
Doctor Strange isn’t an Avenger. He’s simply working with them to save reality.
The Winter Soldier is a fugitive and international assassin. He was never made an Avenger. It’s part of the reason Cap made Sam the new Captain America and not Bucky.
Captain Marvel, Rocket Raccoon, Nebula and Okoye ARE Avengers.
In the aftermath of the dissemination, these characters join Cap, Black Widow, and Rhodie in helping restore order to the planet and galaxy.
Characters appearing in a Disney+ Series are probably doing so to exit out of the franchise or at least move the story forward without their story needing a movie.
Kevin Feige has mentioned that Spider-Man/Iron Man-like crossovers will be common in Marvel movies from now on. It’s a great way to introduce new characters are explore side characters without having to do an origin story.

July 29, 2022 – Ant-Man 3
Ant-Man may be an entry point for the Fantastic 4.
Michael Douglas is said to have re-upped for more movies.
Ant-Man gained a lot of fans in Endgame. (A lot of people have gone back to watch the first 2 Ant-Man films.)
I feel like this movie is going to be a lot bigger than people expect as it’s possibly the best way to bridge the multiverse.

The big questions on the table: What major comic story arcs are we looking at here?
Secret Wars seems like it’s more phase 5-6. Secret Wars is best served as a way to bring in the X-Men and Fantastic 4 and we are pretty confident that’s not happening in Phase 4. Plus, a Phase 6 Secret Wars may mean enough time has passed that we actually get Chris Evan, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson to come back and play alternate versions of Captain America, Iron Man and Black Widow?
Kree/Skrull War seems like it’s better suited for a Captain Marvel movie than a cinematic crossover. But could that lead to a version of the Marvel Illuminati?
Lots of hints that Dark Reign and the Dark Avengers will be building in the next Phase. Norman Osborn is a big player in both Dark Reign and Siege storylines.
Siege is probably too small for a major arc, but there are rumors that Norman Osborn will be the villain of Thor 4! What?! But he’s a Spider-Man villain! Yes, but he also was the Secretary of State when the U.S. decided to invade New Asgard which we now know is in Norway.
Skrulls are a little too new for Secret Invasion to be the next arc. Skrulls haven’t gotten enough time to marinate in the world yet. Plus adding the X-Men, Fantastic Four and possibly even the Defenders means we have more people who can actually be Skrulls! But that might be right on the heels of a Dark Reign storyline.
Doomwar would be cool, but again, probably Phase 5 or 6. How cool would it be to see Latveria invade Wakanda? Maybe Black Panther 3 or Avengers 6?
Maximum Security is a storyline that has the intergalactic races put a giant force field around the Earth because we keep messing everything up. So much potential here, but again, probably not until later.

Coming Up Next week: Part 2 – What is “Avengers 5/New Avengers?”

  • What’s the lineup look like? Who makes the cut for the new team?
  • Will it actually be the Avengers? What are some possibilities we might not be expecting?

The Following Week: Part 3 – “Big Bads and Loose Ends”

  • Who are the Big Bads in Phases 4-6?
  • What other plots and loose threads are still dangling out there?
  • Who’s missing from all this speculation?
  • What’s the final road map look like?
